Managing Hydrogen Impurities

The Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Research Hub (H2FC Supergen) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) are jointly organising a one day workshop, on 17th January 2018 at NPL, to bring together all stakeholders across the hydrogen supply chain to discuss the challenges associated with hydrogen impurities or contamination from the point of production to the point of use, and the relevant technologies and techniques needed to measure and mitigate the impact of the impurities.

Representatives from academia, industry and government are invited to attend this workshop and share their knowledge and ideas, and to inform others of their relevant activities. The scope of the discussions will be broad, ranging from impurity/contamination issues in the steps of hydrogen production, storage, compression, transportation to the mitigation of the impact of impurities in different end-use technologies (fuel cells and H2 boilers).

The output from this workshop will be a document used to scope a proposal for a dedicated study looking at managing impurities in hydrogen across the supply chain, for different end use applications. The output from this workshop and the proposed study will be used to:
· define the current challenges and the technologies available,
· design a testing regime required to better understand the impurity and contamination issues across the supply chain and implement it,
· evaluate and identify the different options for removing impurities or mitigating their impact on the end-use technologies, and
· determine the implications (with actions) for the different stakeholders.
