Next steps for localised energy policies and community energy

This conference will discuss the future prospects for the development of localised energy policies and next steps for supporting community and cooperative ownership of energy generating infrastructure.

The agenda includes discussion on the steps that can be taken to encourage innovation in community based energy generation.

  • It takes place in the context of the Government’s announcements in the Clean Growth Strategy of the launch of a Local Energy programme with the aim of supporting the delivery of the Smart System Plan, a Local Energy Contact Group that builds on the Community Energy Contact Group, and of increased support for LEPs in this area.

    Delegates will discuss the role of local authorities and the implications of publicly owned energy providers across the UK.

    Further sessions will look at the impact of community energy generation and supply on the national grid; forward investment into regional energy and the financial significance and market impact of collective switching schemes.

    Overall, areas for discussion include:
    Evaluating the sector opportunities for localising and facilitating community energy generation;
    Challenges for regulating local energy generation;
    Integrating locally supplied energy into the national infrastructure;
    Assessing the obstacles for continued development of local energy supply;
    Policy priorities for localising energy and future planning; and
    Innovation, investment and implementing community based energy generation.

Speakers include: Patrick Allcorn, Head of Home and Local Energy, Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy,
