Artificial intelligence and robotics: innovation, funding and policy priorities

This seminar will discuss priorities for developing the robotics and AI sectors in the UK.

It follows the publication of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, that builds on the independent review of the AI industry with an Artificial Intelligence Sector Deal - which will focus on making the UK a global leader in AI as well as boosting productivity, safe and ethical use of data, skills and education.

The seminar also follows the recent announcement of £75m investment in AI in the Autumn Budget.

The agenda includes a keynote address from the review’s Joint Lead Professor Dame Wendy Hall, and contributions from Professor Phillip Nelson, Chief Executive, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Chair, Strategic Executive, RCUK and Lord Clement-Jones, Chairman, House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence.

Overall, areas for discussion include:
• Current state of play of the UK AI and robotics sector;
• Policy and regulatory priorities for the UK - looking at the UK Digital Strategy, the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and the potential effects of Brexit;
• Growth and wider adoption - next steps for development and the impact on businesses, consumers and wider society; and
• Potential challenges - assessing the disruptive potential of AI and robotics and issues of public trust, cyber security and unanticipated threats.
